THE A. AND P. SHOW.
FINAL ARRANGEMENTS
Great preparations are being made in connection with the Hovowhenna A. and P. Association Snow, which, as our readers arc aware, takes place on Wednesday. Owing to the large number of entries many extra, pens ior sheep and cat'tlc have been erected, and -Mr Wooding, des])ite the sultry weather, has got the grounds in "excellent condition, and apart. from its practical side, a, most enjoyable day should be .spent. The number of entries bespeak tilie popularity of the show, and demonstrate that farmers are fully alive to the importance of such functions. There is no reason wh t \ in a district like, this, one of the best shows in the donnnon should not take place, and while farmers are anxious to see this 'brought about, no one is more desirous or its fulfilment tihan the committee and its hard-working secretary. A visit to the grounds yesterday was a revelation in itself. Splendid pens have been erected, and' the finishing touches are just about to tie completed. The grandstand has been thoroughly put in order and every convenience has been made for visitors. Considering that it is_ only five years ago since the Association was 'formed, its progress ihas 'been most encouraging, and judging by present indications its future prosperity is well assured. The formation of the Association has led to one most important factor in. agriculture. Farmers have been encouraged to ma'kc new experiments. But above all it ill as produced a great improvement in stock. Wo believe tlvnfc "tlio forthcoming show is likelv to lead to still keener competition and keener competition inevitably means a still further improvement in local stock. The en'tries this year are over a hundred more than in the previous year. The dairy cattle, we understand, will bo one of the chief features of tilie show, and 110 doubt the farmer who will be adjudged first place will be a proud man in the HoroWihcnua. County. Tn (ho horse class there will he a very smart turn out. nominations having come in freely. A great number of prominent local gentlemen and gentlemen outside the district are taking an active part in this matter. From all points of view the fifth annual sihow of the Horowihenua A. and P. Association is likely to he a record success, and. the secretary (Mr B. 11. Gardener) has made full provision for an excellent lunch.
Tlho Hon. Geo. Fowlds is to open the Show. Tt was arranged that the Alinister for Agriculture would do so, but I'll is morning ho telegraphed as follows to Mr B. R. Gardener, tbo secretary to the Association.
"Very much regret that owing to being unable to get through my southern engagements in time to permit my getting north by Wednesday, I shall bo unable to do myself tbo pleasure of being with you 011 occasion of your Show. My worthy friend and colleague, Hon. Geo. Fowlds, will, however, represent tho Ministry. T wish, you all a. most successful Show, with best of weather. " THOS. MACKENZIE.
