Yesterday being the hist day on which the rates could, be paid before the imposition of the 10 per cent, penalty by tlio County Council, quite a procession of ratepayers invaded the County Council olfices in Oxford street. Mr H. E. Lodge, the County Clerk, was kept strenuously cmployed during both office hours and after. During the past two monitlhs several J)antievirke residents have form-? Ed themselves into parties and essayed the ascent of the Ruahine Ranges. Those who have succeeded in accomplishing the feat, speak highly of the Iteautiful scenery and foliage. On a bright day an excellent view of the town of Baimevirke and the surrounding districts is to he obtained. Several parties contemplate making .the trip on Sunday next.
TRIED IT ON THE HORSE. "When driving from Tnmworth to Bowling Alley Point, 0110 of my horses took bad with gripes and got down kicking and struggling," says 'Mr Sam L.
