Dangerous Hat=Pins.
———■*-' —— GERMAN POLICE THREATEN ACTION. The Police President of Berlin, Herr von Jagow, is ever seeking fresh foes to rout, new realms to conquer. Crowned with the laurels won in his campaign against Socialism and journalism, he now sets out with a light heart to make war against a power more formidable than either of these, namely, feminine fashion. In a declaration of hostilities he remarks:—
"For some time past it has been, observed that many ladies fasten their hats on to their heads by means of long pins, the points of which' project beyond the rims. These pins constitute a grave danger in street traffic, and especially inside tramears, for all who come into the vicinity of their wearers, and, indeed, many complaints have reached me of injuries caused by hatpins, in consequence of sudden movements of the head." Accordingly, the Police President peremptorily calls mpon all members of the fair sex either entirely to renounce the use of" such long outsticking hatpins," or to render them innocuous, by covering their points with protectors, which', it has also been observed, "aro offered for sale in the shops here." This is the ultimatum which Herr von Jagow evidently believes will he rendered irresistible by the terror of his name, for he adds, "Presumably T may expect that this hint will suffice to put and end to this dangerous custom, and that I shall be spared the necessity of adopting further police measures against it." There is much curiosity as to whether womankind will submit without striking a blow, and, if not, what steps the Police President will take to enforce his will. Are we to have tho edifying spectacle of fashion's votaries being held up at the point of the sword in Unter den Linden till the steely projections from their hats have been tested with a police tape-measure? Even that cannot be said to be impossible in Prussia.
