The Panama Canal.
DR CLEARY'S IMPRESSIONS
Dr Qeary says in regard to the Panama Canal:— "The works are ■being carried out with organisation and a fever of energy and mechanical skill, which leaves little doubt upon my mind that the hope of the engineers, expressed to me on tho spot, will be amply fulfilled, namely, that this great work will bo ready to be utilised by tbe world's shipping by 1915. It is somewhat of a disappointment to travellers to note that there is comparatively little canal work to be seen beyond the long lines marking the sea. channel into tho new port of Panama aaid the cuttings connecting that channel for some miles with the great dam on the southern or Pacific end, the vast works of the Gatun dam, the biggest construction of its kind in existence, and the works connecting that dam with the Atlantic sido of the canal. The vastly greater part of the Panama. Canal is to :consisjfc of a great central inland lake over which shipping will be able to proceed at high rates of speed l in water of on average depth of close on 90ft." ' ' -
