The Chronicle. PUBLISHED DAILY MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 1990. MADE IN NEW ZEALAND.

■Tiik !( h 1 :i 11 1 maniil'nctu.ren\s who made protest, la A week, against a legislative proposal to have all New Zealand manufactures branded with the place of their origin may have good grounds for their public objections, -but to independent observers their protests seem uncalled for. The fact tlkit certain people believe no good goods an-c made in this country is having far too much weight given to it, for the truth of the matter is that those people who are of this way of thinking "form a very inconsiderable portion of New Zealand's population.

Possibly the Auckland boot manufacturers take a saturnine delight in the knowledge that many people of this class are wearing 'boots to-dav, of New Zealand manufacture, and feeling quite satisfied with them because they appear to too English productions. The fact remains, however, that practices sucli as these amount to fraud upon the public, and that the boot manufacturers of Auckland should bo content to market their manufactures as "New Zealand made." Speaking from personal experience, we can say that at least ,ono Auckland boot manufacturer puts on the market a boot, retailed at one guinea, and purporting to be an English 'boot, which by sheer force of duality could be sold anywhere as an openly-acknowledged New-Zealand-boot.

Manufacturers, misled by fbittoi experiences of ten and fifteen years ago, have failed to recognise the widespread belief of present - time New Zealand folk in their country's products, and their complete willingness to buy local products of proved high quality. The Auckland manufacturers' protest, in short, betokens a quality of business cowardice which is essentially regrettable—for many and widely diffeniing reasons. -
