RAISfNG THE HAT
"Why raise your hat?" is tho motto of the Society for the Promotion of German Modes of Greeting, whose /headquarters are at Darmstadt. It is a wasteful habit, because it wears 'out tho hat brim. It is unhealthy, because in had weather it is aipt to bring oil colds. _ And, worst of all, it is unpatriotic, for the custom was lrom the French, till© first nation in Europe to bare tlvc iliead as a form of politeness. The true mode of greeting for Germans is the military salute, which is of purely Teuton origin, having originated among the officers of the Prussian Grenadiers. Tho society has gained many adherents, and ifibe inhabitants of Darmstadit arc now accustomed to see elderly civilians stand rigidly at at tent-ion and tbring the hand smartly to the forehead when they meet acquaintances in the street. The mare salute, without raising ti'.ie hat, will be welcomed 1 bv many, for when we wear the soft felt hat or the cloth cap \ye find it easy enough to pluck it off. Jiut how to return it to its place? There is 110 .brimthc cliitoa. of comirtes.y is stopped 1111 dm ay, and there is 110 courtiei living who can take off a golf cap and return it to- his .head gracefully.
