Cr. Tompsitt, at Saturday's meeting of tlie Horowhenua County Council, moved' a resolution to the effect that tho Straker ho disposed of, ns it is perfectly useless for the purpose of metalling tho roods of the county. He quoted a, number of figures in proof of his contention, and .said that the cost at the ship's side was £875. Tt was landed on February 22, 1909, and arrived at Otaki on March 17, and the driver's wages during that period amounted to £7 10s. It stni-ted to work on 30th March, and the number of days it had worked wa.s 2.37. while the metal delivered had been 3272 yards. "Wages paid amounted. Do £280. Tn addition to this, proceeded Or. Tompsitt, it was probable •that a proportion of the regular surfaceman's wages (Otaki) for two months shf>uld be chargeable to the. cost of the Strnker metal, hut the ■same was not detailed in the sheets frt>m which he had collected ihis data. Tho cost of repairs to the Strnker amounted to £68. There wore ninny other items in connection with the Straker, such as depreciation, and the creation of metal bins at Otaki (£115) and at Levin. (£46). Cr. McLcavey ' ihdd that the Straker was an absolute failure. He regretted to have to say so, hut it was no good making out that it was a success when it was not. Cr. Richards said that carts could not compete with the Straker. It had not been used during the recent wet weather, hut now thiat fine weathor was prevailing the Straker could carry, and did carry, metal much better than a dray. Tho wagon could carry metal to Poi-otauwhao at consider ably less cost than they could get it taken by part. Tlic chairman oxpressed himself as opposed tk> selling the Straker, and Cr. Venn remarke dthat it was a had bargain when the Council purchased the Straker, but having purchased it they should make tho best of it. Cr. Stephenson thought from the evidence that the wagon was a failure and that it would be a good thin" to dispose of it privately. Oi\ McLeavev desired it to be understood that there was no reflection oti the drivers. No one could work harder than tliev did. . Eventually Cr. Tompsitt withdrew his motion".
