A deputation consisting of members of Parliament: .Messrs ]\lalc:;l in, Poole, Arnold, Clark anci Hall, waited on the .Minister loi I'/.iucation tills morning and urged that a number of tea-iiers who were unable to join o!ie Superannuation Fund when it was inaugurated, s'hould be allowed to <lo so upon payment oi' contributions from tlic inception of the fund with interest.
The .Minister, replying, said that if the request was granted it could only 1)0 I'ot those \\ J lw> were eligible to join the fund in l!)0(i, and who did not do so. legislation would: be required before the .und could be re-opened. He pointed out that the teachers referred to by tthc deputation had !had' six .month,s tirjue in which to join the fund and had. failed to do so. Power had been given the Board to agree to admitting teachers on such"terms as were thought fit if the applicants were of sound: health, mi payment of premium plus interest. At the rat 6 the fund was earning, there was a danger of teachers discovering latent disease and wishing to join to the detriment of tihe fund. ' The Government was very much opposed to the re-opening of superannuation funds. The State would have to support funds out of public money, and it was impossible to keep 'on opening funds indefinitely. He was afraid the chances of his being able to agree to the request were"' ver\ remote.
