Our Superfluous Words There aire about 50,000 different words in the English language, «i:id the average oducated person uses in ( writing and conversation with a tenth of that number. But although we have 30,000 or more all •hut useless words, we'have not a suitable one to express the relation of the maid to the man who is to wed 'her. For this, and for the motord river, we have to go to the French and with nothing better than the "barbarous and clumsy" word 'aviator," we seem to lie in a similar difficulty in describing the "flying man" or "airman." The motor engine Ls comparatively new, but railing in love is as old as the centuries, and although we have "sweetheart," "betrothed," and so on, we still have to fall back upon "liancee.' Ad showing how great a part of the dictionary we could dispense with, it may be mentioned that there are in the Bible about GOOO distinct words, Milton employs some 8000, and Shakespeare about 15,000. To substitute anything "just as good" for Hodder and Tolley's meal is impossible. It stands alone. Low in price; high in quality. >—
