The "Ripple" from the Oliathains brings news of the tragic, death of Mr Alexander Shaiul, one of the oldest residents ot the Islands. Sliand, who was about 70 years of age, was burnt to death in his hrm.se on" July '2i>. He was greatly crippled by rehiimatistn, and had evidently made desperate efforts to escape from tho burning building. Ho was weli known in New Zealand, a keen Maori scholar, and held in the highest authority in regard to the ' Maori 'race. _ He had been working at a Maori dictionary for thirty years. The manuscript was destroyed, together with many other documents relative to native matters, both in New Zealand and the Oliathains.
