i A meeting of the Levin Borough Couiuil was held last eve.ningat the Council offices, Oxford street, the , Mayor (Mr 11. R. Gardener) presiding, and the following members present: Crs. Cameron. Mackenzie, France, Prouse, Williams, Areiis, W.annau, Lancaster, Palmer, ami Mr P. W. Goldsmith (town clerk). A CITIZENS' PETITION. Cr. France put in a petition from a larjije number of residents in the following termsWe beg to draw your attention to the condition of the land in the vicinity of Cambridge •and Tyne streets, owing to the wanii of a proper culvert across filie railway to conduct the water away. The present culvert is much too high and the surface water floods the land before it can get away through fhe culvert. A now culvert at a lower level is urgently needed, as the existing condition of things is a menace to public ihcaltli. and a source of annoyance fo property owners in. the locality. "Wo understand that the Wellington -and Mauawatu Bailwav Company were approached some timo ago, and we would respe"tfully suggest that prompt attention bo'taken to induce, the Railway Department to carry out the necessary work or permit the council to do it. Cr. Franco thought something -boiild lie done a.t once. It wa.s no ;ise dilly-dnllving over tibe matter. Cr. Mackenzie remarked now that the Government bar! taken the railway over he would like to see the town clerk write to the Railway Delia rtment in order t<» ascertain if some arrangement could not bo conic to so that tile work could be carried out. Cr. Lancaster supported the plea: of tho petition. The following resolution, moved by Cr. Palmer and seconded by Cr. Lancaster, was adopted"That, the Government Railway Department be urgently requested to enlarge and deepen the two culverts crossing under the railway at Tyne and Cambridge streets. THE HUG BY CXI OX. On tho motion of (.he Mayfir, seconded by Cr. Mackenzie, the follow-" ing proposition was carried " That the llorowheuua Rugby Union be allowed to make a charge of Is per iiiut'.ih for the following dales: August (J, 13 and 23." ACCOI'XTS. Accounts amounting to £223 were passed for payment. OUTSTANDING RATES. On (.he motion of Cr. France, seconded by Cr. Lancaster, tho following resolution was julopted.:— "That the town clerk take immediate Court proceedings to recover unduly outstanding rents and rates duo to this borough." Cr. Cameron moved .and Cr. Mackenzie seconded"That all ac•onnfs outstanding for gas and iil(ings where no effort has been made to reduce the amount, the same lie sued, for forthwith." I hi.s was also adopted. AfAXPAL FIRE ENGINE. On the imtion of Cr. Palmer seconded by Cr. France, it was del cided to inform the Ohakiine Town Board that the council is prepared to dispose of the manual fire oii"jnn tor the sum of £75. " NATIVE LANDS. Cr. Franco moved, and Cr. Palmer seconded, the following motion, p-i'i , , u ';l s , adopted : — "That Mr f.iolil, M-I ~be written to requesting linn to put a question to the Prenieir asking him if the Government has iiiiy intention of moving in the matter of a closer sub-division of the native and other 'lands, near Levin.
