EVENTS IN SHANNON.

(Reported by " Tlio Chronicle's" Resident Representative A The local branch of the T.O.G.T. held a special meeting on Monday night, when a branch of' tho Prohibition League was formed, with Mr G, II .Gibb as president, iancl Mrs Marclay as secretary. Tho liewlyI'e,ruled league contemplate a visit to Linton at an earl.v date. The Methodists were successful in raising the sum of C'3o at 'their recent Winter Garden Pete. It is the : r intention to have their church re-painfod inside and out ; also to put an addition i n the front of the building. As reported in the Wellington papers some days ago, the Debating Society had its first lecture on Tuesday n itch t. Mr Byron Mrown.of Otaki, addressed a large audience on the financial aspect of Prohibition. Tho lecturer, who paid many compliments to the Shannon people in possessing such a hall as the Druids' Hall, gave an exceedingly able address .which was listened to with great attention by those present. Mr G. H. Gibb occupied t>he chair, and at the conclusion of the address .Mr Urown, at special request, recited "The Mercantile Marine." ' Next Tuesday Mr Gundy will move "That women should not compel" with men lot business or professional occupation." Mr V\ 10. T jangelow will oppose the motion. It was decided by the coiuinitt.ee, prior to tho meeting, to hold a second Shakespearian reading on September oth, instead of the usual social evening. The plav selected is "A Midsummer Night's Dream." llle tennis players held a workiim j bee on Wednesday afternoon. It is their intention to lay down a.second asphalt court lor tho coming season. The Druids' fourth monthly social was held on "Wednesday night, and voted by all to be tho beat this season. _ Over SO were present, who put in a jolly evening dancing to the music of Mr Arch. K. McMinn, of Palmers ton North. Mr E. J. King filled tho position of M.C. in his usual able manner, and an excellent supper was provided in the lodge room. Extra dances were played bv Miss Dohert.v and Pro. Dougall. Duriii" the evening the. new military two" step dance was introduced. The "Miranui" mill has been closed down lor some time, owing to the subway being full of water—which lendeis it impossible to get flax in from the swamp. The Moutoa Instate is likely to be re-opened for flax-cutting about the ond of August.
