At the- Magistrate's Court to-day, Valentine Mn-iser was changed with ill-treating 41 child, lour years and iten months olrl. The cliarge arose out of a recent fire at defendant's house, from which tilie child was rescued off a burning bed. Evidence w.ns given, by neighbours, that they had frequently hea«l the child crying on 18th July, ami one witness stated that slbe noticed the front room of Maiser's hou.se on fire, while all the doors and windows were locked. With a man wlio cihaneed to lie in the vicinity she broke into the bouse, saw the dhild there, and brought her out. There was a charred band of rag dinging to Hie diild, a>ll d a loop was tied round her neck. The child was in a filthy condition, and tihore were soros about her face, arms and head. Tt was also stated that the child was in an emaciated coii-cli'tioii.
Accused told the constable that she loft home at about 2 p.m. on the day of tlio fire. She left tflio child in bed. wiit'li a string attached to its clothes and tied to the bed. That w.'is her usual practice. There were matclies on the dinessing table, .but when sflio returned they were seatltered about. Accused, who declared sin* was innocent of the charge, was committed for trial.
