HOROWHENUA RUGBY UNION.

RECENT QUESTIONABLE

PRACTICES

THE UNION'S ACTION

A meeting of the Ilorowhenua Rugby Union was held last evening at tho offices of Messrs Smart and Thorne, Oxford street, Levin. Mr J. W. Proctor presided, .and those present were:—Messrs Horo Karauti, Ruilii WehepeiLiana, Coote and Thorne (secretary). Ml! SMITH UPHELD. With reference to the question of Mr Smith's letter stating that Woods had di.sputed his decision and that Pukii had to be reported lor tripping, a letter was received from Air \Y. K. Burge, secretary of Horowlieuua Referees' Association, as follows:—"I have to inform you that .Mr J. Smith, referee in the matcih Tainui v. Levin , 13, who ordered off Woods for disputing bis decision, declines to accept Wood's apology. Prior to the offence which terminated in the offender being ordered off, Mr Smith had twice warned the player for the same breach. This is a direct contradiction, of the evidence given by Woods to your Union, as published. Theiefore, Air Smith feels compelled to decline the apology."

Mr Coote said that i ! t made it awkward the referee declining to accept the a.pology. Of course, the Union had to stand by the Referees , Association. Air Karauti remarked tihat tho only thing'to do was k> write to the player and point out that tho referee would not accept his apology. Air Proctor thought that Woods had not reported the whole of tho facts to t/bem. AVhat he had stated at the last meeting appeared to he very trivial. Afr Thome : Air Bur go's letter says that Air Smith had twice to warn him for (be same breach. The referee's letter itself is explicit. He says in that letter he 'had to warn him "repeatedly." The only question before Ihein was tho sentence they had to consider. Mr Coote remarked that the referee's letter was a complete denial of what Woods bad stated. He was always of opinion that they must stick to the Referees' Association. It was a body tlnat bad to be looked up to wi'th .respect. Air Thorne thought the time had passed for dealing leniently with sentence. , ;. Either the players \vpr« coine to rule or the Union was. It was time offences wpi'o dealt with severely. ■Mr Weho.peih.ana opined thaif it seemed to him it was only Air Smith who got n't locsrerlieads with plaveus. Mr Cootp declared that tilings wi'-rp oieitmo- beyond a joke. He ■unved with Ihe views of ATr Tliorne. It wis eveirlnally decided Ho susnoud (lie player for two weeks from that date. PUKU'S CASE. Air Coute moved that Puku be suspended twelve months from thai, date, especially .seeing thait he had been before the Union on a previous ■occasion- three years ago. Air Wehepeihana : It is too strong. He moved, as an amendment, that lie be suspended till tho end of the, soason. There was no seconder to this, and the amendment falling through, (he resolution was adopted. TAIXUI'S COAIPLATXT. With reference- lo the Tainui's •omplaint that in the game with Levin-Wanderer ft team, short time had been played, Afr Burac wrote •l.vting that the referee, Air Sinii.h, reported officially that full time was played and that the game was square from start to finish. Afr Coote moved that the Tainui protest be not uphold Mr Karauti seconded. Afr Proctor diiffered, awl thought it wa,s abciit time the by-laws were revised. Bofji linesmen- coiniM'tent meti -declared the gaol was not t\ go.al. Mr AVt'hepeibana : Tt is a very unfair lihing. Tam given to u'nd.-r-----••tand it was no goal at all. If fell "Ticrt of the bar. The motion was carried. A SILAX'XOX CARE . In connection witih the letter from Mr K. Hout, who had. previously complained of the conduct of the Shannon eap'tain at the Shannon v. Levin-Wanderer match at Shannon, it was stated Mint no reply had been received from Tim ins, who lived a considerable way out of Shannon.

.Mr Conte said t-lint with referaier tf> tin' hi)tor ]if)]-'tifiii oi' Mr lint's dealimj; with tlh> alleged. abusive remarks off the field, th," I i!ion could take no roK-m'sanoe. It struck him when lie saw the match played Timms w."s tho. o.nly "ballv '•port" on tlio fi-rlcl. At ilip .same, time he would, as in all wises, .skind It.v the Referees' Association. fl was remarked that Air Rout had 'mm subjected to heckling. Mr Thome remarked that ho hoard tli; , player in question .say fl number ■ f abusive epitihot.s to' Mr Rout, wlu'ii in the lioiftl. Mr Proctor: Wo can't help that,. Mr Rout .should take court proceeding. It was generally remarked that if Mil? pla\w was guilty of the offences •'llejied. he .should :have been put off Mio fitld at the. (.ime. Ft was decided to inform theolayer that if ho coininitt'Orl a similar <;f. fonce he would ho dealt with severely. WIXIATA'S TRANSFER. Mr P. T. Robinson wrote to the '■■ffccf that the .secretary of his Snb--I'iHiiii informed him that the Union !:ad asked for a transfer for W. Win-i.-ita IVo mtho Albion Football Club (Koxton) to Levin. ll e added, that l ie had placed the matter before his ■ •lult on the previous ovwiiujr/iand ho :-ad been instructed to inform tibe urrelary of the Levin Club that the Albion Club objected to givini t!ie 1 ranslVr. a.s the Albinn.s lind not yet finishod its cup matches.
