ANXIETIES OF MOTHERHOOD.
« ALLEVIATION JiV THE STATE FORESHADOWED. GOVERNMENT AS FOSTER FATHEIt. in the Financial Statement read alt Wellington last night by tlic Premier, Sir Joseph Ward, the following important pronouncement was made:— Considerations both of the State's permanent welfare and of humanity must impress our people with the wisdom of providing a scheme whereby the wives of omr low waged workers and poorer small settlers may be relieved of some ot the anxiety which at present accompanies (Legislation will therefore be introduced this year providing for the co-oi>-wation of Hospital Roairds with the Government to provide a proper measure of relief in these cases. Until an adequate supply of midwives and sufficient saccomodation in our hospitals for maternity oases can be furnished, the Hospital Boards will bo asked to make their own homes. Tine expense of this: attendance upon expecting mothers in (their own homes will bo defrayed partly by the husband and the remainder from the consolidated' fund. The Government will pay two-thirds of th© cost. This provision will apply only in cases where the earnings of the workers or sottlers are under £200 a year.
