EVENTS IN SHANNON
(Reported by "The Chronicle's" Resident Representative.)
On and after this week, aJI shops and' business premises in both Shannon and Tokomaru will ho closed at 0 o'clock on Saturdays. On Saturday Constable Esson lirought a num named Robert McXab before Meessrs J. R. StanseJl and G. X. Wood, J's.P., on a, charge of being idle and disorderly and causing annoyance to Shannon residents. Tho accused pleaded guilty and was sentenced to three months in Wellington gaol, he being an old offender, and having a long list of charges agaist him for various offences.
The usual largo number of debaters turned up on Tuesday night to tho Druids' Hall, for their usual monthly "social." The extremely bad weather made very little difference, to the attendance. An excellent programme of music and games was provided. Mr A. E. Gibh occupied the chair. Hiss P. Gunning opened the proceedings with a well played pianoforte solo. Mr F. 73. Langelan gave, as a, mandolin selection, "Egypt." Mr W. H. Gunning sang, Miss Asquith recited "Jdting" in good style, Mrs Laurvig gave a reading, and Mr W. Clayton obliged with a monologue. Games, for which prizes were rdven, were entered into with zest by both old and young. Mr Barclay'instituted a _ novel book title guessing competition, which ivas won by Miss G. Gardiner. A driving competition caused a good deal of merriment, the ladv having to drive, the gentleman blind-folded, round a coivrso marked out with bottles. This was won by Mks Xewth and Mr C'ou«T"ii J lle ™ in( * R lflsed with j "Anld Lang Syne."
