Von Veltheim in Gaol.

LOW HE IS SEKYING HIS 20 \ EARS' M'LNM'I-iNCK. A ronvspiiiir.'.eiit .Sciul-s _ .Keyii'okls' newspaper (London) an interesting account <;!' the daily routine of Von Yeltheiin, the convict, win) is now serving at Parklmrst Prison a term of twenty years' penal servitude, to which he. was .sentenced at the Old Bailey (London) by -Mr Justice Philliuior'o alter having been found " guilty" 'of demanding money with menaces from Mr "Solly" Joel. Since his incarceration Von Veltheim has conducted ■himself well, and has been, in cnii.sn|iienco allowed on* or two of the privileges granted to orderly prisoners. One of these is .that he is given tea. in lieu of gruel for breakTast. and he wears a black cdllar and cuffs 'on, hi.s bread-arrow garb, a sign that be has not given any tnmble to the wanders. The dreary, unbroken monotony of prison life is telling its inevitable tale, a.;.:d he h:«s already hist a considerable amount of weight. His ranee now ])re.sents a marked contrast to tho tall, commandiing soldier of fortuii'L' who .stood in the dock at the Old Bailey. The convict's daily routine, begins shortly ai'itor five- o'clock. Al'tor (deaning out his cull, he ha.s to bo ready fur breakTast at 5.-b>; threo-<|U.artcrs of an hour later he attends chapel, and at the stroke of seven o'clock he must be on parade preparatory to comimencinig the morniing's work. Von Voltheiin's employment, at present consists of net-making, a. duty which is performed inside the prison, ft is probable that if he eontiiMirs his good conduct ho will shortly be allowed 'outdoor employment, and will probably work on the convicts' detention fromo, which is being built at C'amp Hill, a. short distance from the prison. Tho convict's dietary is as follows:—Breakfast—.Daily : lOoz brown bread, \m margarine, with one pint, of ten. Dinner—-Monday : 12oz haricot beans, lib potatoes, 2oz fat bacon,B oz bread. Tuesday : (ioz mutton, lib potatoes, Boz bread. Wednesday: One pint pork sou.]), lib -potatoes, Boz bread. Thursday: Ooz beef, lib potatoes, Boz bread. Friday: One pint vegetable soup, lib potatoes.B oz bread. Saturday: lib suet pudding, lib potatoes, Boz 'bread. Sunday: Goz corned beef, lib potatoes, Boz bread. Simper—Daily: One pint cocoa, with 12oz brown' bread. Although rather taciturn, and morose, Von Veltheim has n ever thl ess several convict chums, whom ho in-v-vi'ia-hlv greets with a smile as thev file out of their pells every morning. Ho is the tallest man in tho sraol. and when he arrived sivvial clothes and slices had to be made for him, tlie ordinary stock sizes heinc too small. His shoes .ire size 13. Von Veltheim is in the prison ohapoj cTvoir, and he hrks bis <?eep, po.wp.rlul voice to good effect.
