Britain as a Producer.
An anonymous writer in an unacknowledged newspaper says:— It has been frequently said that the "Roast Beef of Old England" 'is imported. Lt is to be suspected that the opinion, was uttered wilt'Ji no btitter fliithority than a satirical article in a Xenv York magazine. England still "grows" her roast beef, and a.lso her mutton, and .the classes that ealti it are the classes who always hiuvo eak'iiii it. The chilled and frozfii mot-hods enable her to impoint meait for the masses. Kven so them is loss ini'ported than is home grown. Thus, whilst she imports i-oivgbly spMikiug, nip to half a nvillion tons (if beef in various forms, she produces for her ovens locally nearly 800,000 tons, and whilst shii? takes in '200,000 tons of mutton she se-iuls local niiiitton to her butchers to the amount of 320,000 tons. Tihe repeated representations of England being boastful, played out, pauperised, and aill the rest of it, .are neither loyal nor true, and -men with a love for the iold land resent it. Great Britain is not omly an exporter of "pots and pans" ('manufactures)—she is one of the gre'attieist exporters of raw prodiucts in. the world, for her size and limitations. Whilst she re-exports £00,000,000 worth of raw produces, sho dloes sometihing else'—she exports £64,000,000 of her own products, and food products run pretty high. Thus she sends away grain and flour (despite imports') of her own production, .meat and other food and drink to the sum rtf £20,000,000, and other raw products to the tune of £43,000,000. Great Britain jJHII oaiTtes more 1 horned stock than Australia, mow sheep than any Australian State other than New South Wales, nnd beats the Ooimnowwealtih in her wheat pfodiuotion. Get all the trade from England that we can and sell her all we can and be grateful; 'hut there is no reason for taking her great imports .as an widence that she can do nothing for brirsi'il'f. She is a groai importer hpraupe she is rich.
