SALE OF DAIRY STOCK.

BIG PRICES FOR GRADES.

The sale of pedigree Jersey and grade stock (conducted by Gillies and Xaldor) for, Mr W. Jiu.tler at the farm, Mnnaia, on Friday, was a conspicuous success. The pedigree animals returned an average- of 32 guineas, and the grades a little ovei £13, the whole herd of 72 head averaging £16 (saj's the Hawcra Star). There was a large attendance of local and ciitsitlo buyers, 'but the local Jersey fanciers were tdo intent on keeping good stock in the district to give outsiders much o'f a look in. For several years past our Sotuth Taraiuiki fanners have shown a pronounced and commendable desire to improve >the efficiency of their herds and thus advance- the interests of tho industry by the purchasing of first-class dairy animals. The Jersey breed have been particularly in. demand. It lias been clearly demonstrated from tim-e to time thai! it pays, and (pays handsomely, to run a dairy farm with well bred stock. Not only are milk cheques bigger, but there is a more profitable market for calves or heifers, etc., and as a rule good cattle eat less foddei than scrubbers, consequently are less costly to keep. Two pronounced features of the sale were in the remarkably brisk bidding experienced (advances of £o being made even on givulo stock) and the fact that practically none of the animals was. taken away from our great dairying district. Mr R. Linn (Xor/nanbv), Hoskin (Opunake), Phillips (Mo-n-gatoki), and Blnckwell fWhakalnara) were the buyers who Kved furthest away fr'om the Plains district. On the whole the prices realised and the rnipid sales effected set up something of a. record on the const. Complete arrangements to scxMM'P the comfort of the auctioneers and prospective buyers had been made by 'Mr Butler, a small enclosure being set aiwrt in one corner of the stock nt -n. «:ilo ring.
