NATIONAL DAIRY SHOW.

AN IMPORTANT GATHERING.

SUCCESSES FOR HOKOWHENUA

COUNTY

A preliminary notice of the National Dairy Show, at l'almor.ston North, was printed in yesterday's Chronicle. The promise of fine weather that ushered in the morning was made good all day, though an eagerness in the air compelled spectators to keep moving or be frozen. However, the housing o,f ithe various exhibits in the great machinery shed enabled the visitors to inspect everythng under conditions of comfort, Principal interest attached to 'the milking macihine exhibits, Wihch wevo. to be met with at almost every turn automatically squeezing and sucking with commendable persistence, while dairymen and others stood around, testing the mechanisms by inserting their fingers in ithe tent cups. In addition to the displays of milking machines to 'be on the perni'anent_ stands, there wore, five machines installed at a special auditorium, wherein three actual demonstrations of milking wera given : one in the morning, one in the 'afternoon., .and one in the even'ng. Cows specially reserved, for these niilkings were brought alomg to the demonstrations-—five on. each, occasion-and five distinct classes of milking machine were put in operation .at the one time. Special charges wwe made for admission to these demonstrations, and the results w:is a substantial gain to the show takings. The demonstrations wei-e of an exceedingly interesting nature. There was trouble, expert enced by one machine-'s supervisor ■through the determined efforts of one of his pair of cows to use him for a leaning post, but except for this exporienre the whole of the demonstrations passed off successfully.
