N'ortb to-day, w!:ere tb.e gree.t Xai 1 ional I),airy Show of the .Manawatu Agricultural and Pastoral A.schticn i.s in progress. There i.s h.ss bustle and sport about this fiinev:on than .there is in connection with the same as-scoiation's summer show, bat l.lie studious fanner .sets this grr.it winter .gathering far above the November one in point of merit, 'ihe Nat.anal Dairy Show i.s one n.t which the expert and the learner are brought together under circu instances favourable to the imparting t of use-lul o'bject lessons on various m.atitirs relating to dairy farming and various forms of land, culture uilrich are incidental to that pursuit. The latest designs in dairy utensiil.s, the "cutest" things in fences and farm implements, the generally useful <mtl (if we niustb say it) itlie occasionally meretricious devices designed to catch the farmers' pence, are shown side by side; to [ the end that those who are able to select wisely may do so, and those who can profit only by sad experience may hasten .to pay dearly for their whistle. The great plains city, in short, will be full of life and excitement for the iiisx'fc four days, a.iiid tine representatives of the various pastoral and agricultural communities will be gathered together for mutual investigations, to profits by the exchange of knowledge gained from experience, and to listen: attentively to the lectures given for their guidance 'by the various Government experts now congregated, at the show. The. popularity of these winter shows, we take it, is one of the moist convincing signs apparent in these times as surtity for success of future fawning operations; for the spirit of keen inquiry, and of determination to investigate thoroughly the various theories and demonshvation.s that are put forward must result, .inevitably, in a sustentation or betterment of the progress made in Stock and cl'airy fanning during the
last decade. The sustained popularity of the National Dairy Show is something for which all keen advocates of farming development should .feel gratified. For our own part, we can. felicitate the Manawatu Agricultural and. Pastoral Association, most -heartily, upon tlie un,deviating career of success that its shows ihave -pursued. During the long succession of years in which we have been- attending them we have known of no single show that liatl not .some outstanding feature of success to differentiate it from its -predecessors. The Winter Show of 1910 may be trusted to develop, during the next day or two, something to give peculiar quality to its particular successes. One cause for local pride, already a;]>parent, is the success of It'be Levin Dairy Factory iu the .several divisions of the dairy classes wherein it competed. Details of these winnings may be seen in the news columns of .to-day's Chronicle. The staff and the shareholders of the concern are deserving of hearty congratulations upon the ability to produce and the pluck to exhibit' which were equally necessary before the present good results could beramo possible.
