LEVIN BOROUGH COUNCIL.

COUNTY COUNCIL CRITICISED. The usual mo tiling of the Loviu Borough Council was held, last ©veiling, at tbe Council Chambers, Oxford street, 'Mr 15. 11. Gardewer (the Mayor) presiding, and. the following members prison b: Crs. Canneron, Meiveuzic, France, Prouse, A reus, Hannan, La.noa.ster. lkidsom, and Palmer, with .Mr P. W- Goldsmith (Town Clerk). R.OAD WA Y IMPROVEMENT. Messrs Booth, McDonald and Co. 1 wrote* stating that .they understood from Mr Blake that he had had a. conversation with the Council re tho Austin rock crusher. 1 n eonneetion with this they sent particulars of the machine, which, they said, Avns n. thoroughly reliable one in every respect. Messrs Andersons, Ltd., of Christchurch, wrote on the same subject, statins that they wore sole agents lin New Zealand for the Aveling and Porter traction engines and road rollers, and adding that they were now ill a. position to nioiii.nPacture stone crushers, ami that they had a second hand crusher in stock—price with elevator £200.

The Mayor said to him the matter was <n- serious one. The County' Council did not sooui to have dealt with the matter in a serious manner. Some of the councillors had .said it was ridiculous to contribute to the cost of road repairing through the damage caused by the Sfraker, hut it was Most unfair to say what they did. This council had only asked what was fair and equitable. Tt seemed to him that it was h'ardIv fair to expect the council to bear half the cost of the stone crusher. He would like to see the question of the cost held over for two years. Cr. TTmifin regretted the decision of the Countv Council. When Cr. Richards ir-.de (the remark he did aibrvt a ridiculous proposal', he must not have been aware of the facts of the case. Cr. Lanr-ster thought the Straker had den a great deal of damage, and 1 1 ■.nt the County Council should do snmelthing to repair that damage. The M. ayor pointed out that the Countv Council .had practically an unlimited income, whilst this council had onlv a small one. The request of the Borough Council was", onlv a reasonable one. Cr. McT\eiv/,ie was persuaded tin* County Council had nolt considered the matter fnilv, and that they had not looked at the subject from the broad point of view. A Motion was adopted on the proposition of Cr. Lancaster, seconded by Cr. MeKenscie, that this council regrets the action of the County Council in ignoring the protests of this council re tbe damage done by the Straker wagon, and asks _ that body to reconsider its decision. Oir the motion of Cr. Franco, seend'ed. bv Cr. Lancaster, the following resolution was adopted: That estimates be procured of the quantity of waiter which would, be needed to drive the stone crusher, with the view of _ obtaining a turbine and driving it from the main instead of using a steam engine. It was also decided, on the motion of Cr. France, seconded by Cr. Palmer, .to nsk the County Council to give instructions that 'the Straker wagon he drawn all over the metal and not lie kept in. one rut. Eventually the Mayor moved, and Cr. Cameron seconded the. following resolution, which was agreed to: That this council combine with the County Co mini I in purchasing a sine crusher, and that the streets committee ho requested to draw up a report as to the portion of costs I and other expenses that this council should pay towards the purchase of a. crusher, and 'to report at the | next meeting. I A CITIZEN'S COMI'LAfNT [ Mr W. Gillatt wrote stating thai lie had never refused to pay the collector, nor d,id he say he would not pay his account. As a matter fact, he asked the collector to find out how it was he had never called on liini before for the sanitary lees. This was no .small matter to kirn (the writer) as lie had now been in Levin some time, and this was the first time since he had come to Levin that he had been called upon to pay for sanitary services. He had ,1 >een in several houses, amd he would be much obliged if the Council would get. him an account from the contractor as to how th" amount was made up. If he (Mr Gillatt) considered it was .correct, be would pay up at once . The letter was formally noted. LIGHTING OTAKT. The Otaki Road Board wrote conveying the information that tbe following resolution had been .adopted by., .them : -"That the offer of the Levin Borough Council to sell tell of the old acetylene lamps and iron, posts to the Otaki Road Board foi the sum of ,C 2 be accepted." This was noted. MrNICIIWL GAS "WORKS. Jhe T<-w,i Clerk to the Foxtm. Borough Council wrote stating that bis Council thought of pun-basing the lo'vil gas works. He would be obliged ii this C:;iiii"il would gir '■Mil iulirm it;::;i as to the amount ol g-is Levin made per t'.iv, tli ■ 'iriee charged to consumers, and t he profit at the end of the year.
