MEN'S. LEVIN (4) v. UAV VivAU (0;. This match was played on the Levin Reserve yesterday. The ground was somewhat slippy, oving •to the heavy rains, but notwithstanding this some I'ast and excite ing play was shown by both teams. Neither side was fully represented, Manakau, in fact, only playing seven of their own team .and two substitutes, while Levin were minus one. The opening exchanges were evenly contested, and a rush at the Levin goal was promptly repulsed by Whitehouse. A last, combined rush by the home forwards took the ball to the other end, and Stuckey was prominent in a melee. Play drifted to midfield. for a brief period, and Stuckey was again seen to advantage. Shortly afterwards Vincent came within an inch of scoring, and several other dangerous rushes were splendidly saved, by Bacchus, who was a tower of strength to Manakau. Levin were now having the better of the r>- ame, and the visitors goal had a couple of narrow shaves. The. pressure was relieved by W. Bevan. who ma do a good run up field, but was pulled up bv Gardener, who was putting in a lot. of solid work. Not to he denied 'Mnnak.au again assumed the aggressive, and things looked awkward for Levin, until Whitehouse relieved the tension, and as the result of a persistent attack upon the Whites goal Henderson scored. Manakau now played up spiritedly, and Smith, the homo custodian, was called upon to save on two successive occlusions. The visitors were showing a great amount of tactful combination, and no doubt with their full strength some of their efforts near Levin goal would have fructified. Levin forwards missed a coiipls '.of chances to score, and Wilson, Easther and. Vincent, # all of whom were playing with great dash, can >d Bacchus a lot of trouble, hr' that player proved equal to emergencies. A few minutes before, half time Bevan was conspicuous with a good run down for Manakau. but it proved abortive. and half-time arrived« with Levin leading by one goal to nil. On the resumption, play was of a fluctuating character for the first .spell, and then Johnson made a fine run down the field, and some warm work occurred, in the visitors 25. W. Bevan and Necs, however, got the ball away in fine style, and a lot of rami and end to end plav ensued. . Despite th<;ir disadvantage, the Whites were playing with commendable spirit, and on two occasions Hugh Hall relieved with vigorous swipes, but Levin bore them down;. Quarter of avi hour after the re-start. Stuckey shot a second goal. A little later on Johnson lurched anether noint, and Stuckey wot a fonrlh. There was no further scori"e\ Mr J. Shainkla.nd. held the whistle. Although the visitors were defeated hv four goals, they played an excellent game, i though- Levin had slightly the better of matters. On several occasions Manakau failed to take, advan- , tage o-f onnortunifies, and i» ">ie ; instance thev lost a goal ahsolu.'flev i through over anxiety on the part: of . a forward.
