WATER SUPPLY FROM LEVIN.
DISCUSSION HELD OVER. UNTIL NISXT MONDAY. At Monday might's Council meeting (reports the Eoxton Herald), a letter was road from the Lovin town clerk, advising that he had beiM> <lirw"ted by his Council to say thai having satislied itself that Uli'ere is an ample supply of water for bo-tih towns, for very many years to come, the Council is prepared to supply Foxton from Uio Levin mains few the sum of sixpence per 1000 gallons. Ho also stated that the Mayor of Levin antl 'the councillors would be very pleased if the Koxton council!ore could .appoint a day to came over and six* the. luxulworks, etc. Thu town clerk replied that at the request of the Mayor, he had gone into the offer of the Lovin Borough Council 'to simply water to the Fox ton Korouah. .at sixpence pen , 1000 gallons. Taking Mr Climie's ofttinnate of 50 gallons per head per day (and he hsid been informed by Mr Climie -tlwit this cistimate is very often exceeded) foi Fox'toii's present popiiilation only, esitimnted at 1500, he found that Fox ton would use 75,000 gallons daily, or 27.375,000 gallons! This quantity at sixpence per 1000 gallons would cost £676 5s per annum, which is more thfl-n sufficient to pay interest at it'h'o rate of 4J per cent, on £15,000. He had iisr-ertained from Mr Climie that the main to Levin (9 inch) .would cost £15,000, the mains through the .borough, £'5500, interest on which at 4$ per cent, added ito the cost of the water as above would be £1598 15s per annum. With a nine inch main there would be sufficient press-lire for fire purposes. With a six inch main, which would only eanry a third of the water that a nine inch nwiin would, and would cost £10,000, it would in all probability be found necessary to erect large storage tanks on <an elevation, to get sufficient pressure for fire purposes.
The Mayor said that lie hadn't gone fully into the .question, as he could sec by the price asked that it was quite out of tile qnefiltion to even consider it. He was satisfuvl liowever, that tlie Levin Council was prepared to re-consider the matter. He. suo;<rested that it should be discussed at the special meeting to be held next evening.—This course wan agreocl to.
