During April, according to Uio official statement, thirteen Chinese arrived in New Zealand—-12 at Wellington and. one at Auckland. Forty-five Chinese took their departure, over thirty leaving from Wellington.
As Mr Byron Brown and his daughter, accompanied by Mr A. Giovw,_ were motoring i'rom Otaki to Levin early this morning they bad a very exciting experience. Near the bridge at Mnnaknn tliey saw a. man approaching on horseback, at' a poimfc where the road slopes. To avoid running into tho hoiso the ear bad to be twice deflected from its course, ami as a result of the slippery going this caused the wheels to skid, ynd the oar was tihrown over an embankment. Mr and Miss Brown escaped with a flight shaking, but Mr Grover linrl bis shoulder injured sufficiently to medical .attention. All three »'f the parties concerned regard their escapes from more serious iniil ries as Providential. The oar fared rather badly, and it had to r-nne on to Oban "under inrv masts."
