EVENTS IN SHANNON. (Reported by " Tlio Chronicle's" Resident Representative* Shannon residents and settlers will he sorry to hear that our genial and obliging staitionimaster, Mr George. I'aton, is shortly beiu": (transferred to Te Ante. They will all join with me in wishing Mr Raton success in his new home. Tlio Debating Society is steadily growing in favour. At tho last meeting of tho society tlio debato was on tiie question whether tho expansion of the British Empire was duo rather to colon ising power than' to military powers. Several visitors from' Tokoniaru wor'o present, and helped to swell the number, making the seats a.t a premium. Mr Saunders spoke in favour of colonising, and Mr Gibb for military powers. Both gentlemon. handled their subjects splendidly, Mr Gib in particular making a v'ory thorough and completo speech. The former speaker was seconded by Mr Galland, and the laitter by Mr Langelan. Messrs W. Murdoch, L. O'Connor and .Tudd also spoke. At the conclusion it was put to the vote, the colonising power winning the day by two votes. Next week will prove particularly interesting, it being the first Shakespeare night. On this occasion the "Merchant of Venice will be the particular play chosen, in which the members "will enact the different characters. A movement is on foot to get tho library re-opened and _ put on n sound basis. This will be appreciated by very many residents. The Druids are at present installing a 2000 candle power Kitsen lamp in their hall, which, if successful, should make it one ftho best lighted halls on the coast. Air Leitz is at presenit installing nu engine and complete plant at Temukanui mill. Tokoniaru. for the purpose of experimenting with waste from the flax. It is hoped that lie will be successful, and will soon be able to o]f)on up a new field of emnlovmenit in tho dominion. The Snenccr Bros, are at present milliner down Mr A. Seifert's Paiaka flaxmill, which is to be re-erected a few chains farther back—owing lt<> the Mauawatu river encroaching on the present structure. Additions are 'to be made shortly to the Levin Post Office, but no word has been received yet as to when Shannon is to have something done in this direction.
