EDUCATION AND AGRICULTURE.

LETTER FROM MR FIELD, M.P. XFAY SCHOOL FOR MAKERUA. The Following interesting letter is to hand from Mr W. H. I'iold, Parliamentary member for this electorate: • 1 have received word that the Government has agreed to errant a sum of C.'i'iS 10s for the purpose of erecting a school at Makerua. 'Ihis is a school which has been asked, for for some time r<a< by the people in and about Makerua. as they have felt that the distance to the Shannon school on the one side and the Tokomaru on the other was rather far. particularly for young children, and many of them object to sending their children to school by conveyance. A number of members of the Board, including myself, visited the locality somo months mvo- and approved a school site fronting on the main road, part of Mr F. W. Venn's property. The site originally set apart lor the school was found to be most unsuitable in every w\ay. and Mr Venn has generously agreed to mike an exchange hv giving the site sclented bv the Board and taking in return for it the unsuitable site origiivallv provided.

"An item of importance to farmers generally is embodied in nn announcement made to me by the Minister of Agriculture the other da v. that it has been decide.. to publish monthly reports of the Agricultural Department in lieu of thn present annual report. The twelve monthly reports, of course, can be bound into a volume at the end of the year to constitute a repert for the whole year. The Labour Department issues monthly repents, and T hnve never been able to see why the Agricultural Department should not do so also. The monthly publications are of far more value to farmers than annual ones. ft very often happens that valuable information can be supplied by the Department which 10-is that value to a large extent by being withheld from tlie public until publication in tne annual re- : 1 '■ t. The monthly reports will be published at .a nominal figure and supplied to all farmers who wish to be supplied with them.

"I am leaving for the Ray of Plenty to-morrow, in company with tiiv wife and .shall he awav about a week."
