A serious lire occurred at (Shannon. last evening, resulting in tlio .lostruction of a number of buildings. So far as can bt> ascertained tlio fire originated in Alonteith's Milliard saloon, and by tlio time tlio ilames were discovered the building was well oil fire, and fanned by a diff breeze it spmid rapidly. As there is no (ire brigade in Shannon, the large number of willing workers who were quickly on tlio spot were greatly handicapped, but by persistent effort tlioy succeeded in saving other property thatother,vise would have been consumed. I'he billiard saloon was gutted, and: the Silver Grid was burned out, and -ltansell's auction mart was destroyed. The Shannon hoarding House suffered in a similar manner. The greatest excitement prevailed throughout. Fortunately tlio wind : ell during the early hours of the •norning, and many willing handis vith buckets of water drenched the ldjacent buildings, which were Mireatened by the flames. Tlio fire ilariii, at Levin, was rung, and ■•otne of the members of the brigade ! :urned out; but as the locality of die fire was not known those who •et out in the direction of the rod 'ight which could be seen a long listance away, relturned.
