Several rating matters and the question of water floods at Tokomaru, which were dealt with at tho Horowhenua County Council to-day, will appear in Monday's issue ol tho "Chronicle." George Stevens, a well-known resident of Greytown, aged 37 years, a. married man, died suddenly this morning between 2 and 3 o'clock. The immediate causo of doath was heart failure. Xo inquest will he held as deceased had been under medical treatment.— Press Association. When the Palmerston Xorth Beautifying Society was discussing the 'matter of beautifying the cilty, a member suggested that Japanese oherrv trees bo planted a.long the streets. Mr A. E. Clausen strongly opposed 'this, saying that there were several cherry trees now in Cuba street, and that tho small hoys of the neighbourhood severely damaged the trees in pursuit of the fruit. Mr Park eased Mr Clausen's feelings by stating 'that Japanese cherry trees did not bear fruit.
Rov. D. C. Bates' summary and forecast, as wired by Press Association from Wellington lasifc night, is as follows:—The barometer has risen in the northern districts but fallen in the southernmost parts. The weather has been unsettled, but improved to-day. Strong southerly winds have prevailed in tho north, and variable winds in the south. Present indications are for strong Westerly winds generally with rough weather in Cook Strait and Fovea 11 x Strait. The barometer will probably fall again in the north after 21 hours, and be very unsteady in tho south, where unsettled weather is oxopeted.
