HOROWHENUA COUNTY COUNCIL
A meeting of the Horowiionua County Council was held this un ruing, at the Council offices, Oxiord street, Levin, Cr. Watson presiding, and tlio following members were present: Crs. Richards, McLeavey, IVouse, Windley, Stephenson, Venn, Freeman, jiud Tompsitt; and Air Jl. F. Lodge (county clerk). OHARITABLIO AID. The acting-secretary of the* Wellington Hospital and Charitable Aid Hoard wrote forwarding notification of the amount of the apportionment to lie contributed by the Council to that, Hoard for tho year 1010-11. and asking the Council to endeav- ( iir to make arrangements for an early payment of the first quarter's levy, in order that, the Hoard might be able to meet its immediate liabilities. The amount of apportionment was C 1,272 Ids. Cr. Venn: It is the same thing as usual. Rut it is lighter than twelve mouths ago. Cr. Richards: Yes. It is about C2OO lighter than last year. Venn : Either return tho money or write to the other persons embodying the substance of Mr Ram.s.bottoin'.s letter. The County Engineer: Could tho malfter not stand over for a month, and in the meantime try to get the other people's money? ft was decided to inform Mr R.amsbottom that if the other people who had promised, donations did not redeem their premises hv the next, meeting his money would be returned. POLITICAL PURITY. McLeavey, the matter was held over for th • meeting of ratepayers on the water races qustion. PROPOSFD NEW ROAD: VIEWS OF MR FIFLD. M.'P. Mr W. 11. Field. ENGINEFrT^TrEPOKT. The Countv Engineer (Mr J. Malcolm) presented the following report : - To Moro Riding.- Tn this riding the main mid has been repaired from the. gravel pit at Had field to Waikanae; it is now in good order and only requires traffic. I have railed tenders for the Waikarjae Beach road extension, and they are due to-day (Government grant). Tiie contractors, Yaiighan and Lanchs.l.or, aivi getting on with thei. eon I Riot for re-screwing and iug the Waihoanga bridge; I expert they will finish before next meeting of the Council. The surfacemen report that the district roads are nnslly all in fair order now. Ota Id Riding. All roads in this riding are in fair order. The widening of the main rood at ManaJv.au is finished, and is a great improvement. T must again draw tiie attention of the councillors tor the riding to the need for acquiring a gravel pit somewhere nearer tho middle of the township, the surfaceman reported to nie yesterday that a lead of metal could hardly be go'f oven by paying for it. Wirokino Riding. —!" have, got all the roads, main and district, repaired, with the exception of the Muhuiioa East, and Foxtoii ; the Foxton is now in hand, the Strakor doing it; I will get the Miihunoa fixed up next wvek. f have called tenders for metalling the worst parts of the Tavistock road, and they .are due to-day. I propose getting the new bridge, put in at Broadbelt's, next week. T'ikomaru Rifling. Tn this riding metal repairs have been effected on all the district and main roads where required in the northern end. The footpath at Tokomani from the main road to the railway station has b■•en gravelled. Wilton's road lias been formed veiy satisfactorily, .and is now open for traffic. Some metal repairs are urgently needed at the Shannon end of the district, especially (ii the main road; 'these will he attended to in a. few days. The formation of Stafford street, Shannon, from the butter factory to tho Shannon East road will, I expect, b.' Finished to-day. The metalling contract on the Heights road has been dune satisfactorily. The tenders !':r widening the liKiin road, betwe-m Shannon and Buckley, arc due to-day (Government gran.t). I propose to get tenders in at next meeting for repairing- the old Ferry road, in accordance with the arrangements made the other day with the representatives of the eJao.-iwatn o<<untv Council.
