Pugilistic Mayor.

FIGHT AT A COUNCIL MEETING

Over a question as to whether the relief funds for the flood sufferers had been properly administered, the mayor of a town near Paris, and his assistant had a serious discussion, which ended in a boxing scene. The event came off in the midst of a sitting of the Town Council. The assistant accused the mayor of having systematically refused certain help that was offered.

"I had no time to amuse myself with titled ladies," said the mayor.

"It would have been better than to do so with ragamuffins," retorted the assistant mayor.

This created a general uproar in ■the assembly, one-half of which sided with the mayor and the other half with tl 10 assistant. Both men are equally honourable and well-inten-tioned, no doubt, but in the course of the dispute their anger got the bettor of them, and thoy closed together in a regular fight. Both of them used their fists very vigorously, gnd for a few moments a good fight was on, until (their friends separated them. Strangely enough, 'both men are rather far removed from the age of youth, one .being 70 and the other 72 years of age. The difference, it seems, has since been settled and tlier will he no more fuss about it.
