OPPOSITION AND LABOUR.

THE ALLEGED COALITION.

[PEU PRESS ASSOCIATION. 1

AUCKLAND, May 4. Several Labour leaders seen witTi reference, to the statements made yesterday as to the intentions of tho Independent Labour Party, were very reticent, but more or less endorsed the statements made.

The Herald representative was informed that the Australian Labour Party had definitely tho Dominion's Labourites' invitation to se-nd over representatives to conduct an electioneering campaign here, but the names of such had not yet transpired. Three of those who had originally intended to come, Messrs Andrew Fisher, J. Thomas, and W. M. Hughes, were now, however, members of the Federal Ministry, and would, therefore, be unable to come.

One prominent official says: "Many workers are still under the mistaken idea that Mr Massey is narrow-minded, and that if he were returned to power the advanced legislation at present on the statute book would be repealed. But of course .that is all tommy rot, and many Labourites, including myself, voted for, the Opposition at tlio last polls." A number of local members of Parliament, on being interviewed, declined, to express any opinion on the matter, although one Opposition! member stated, that he did not think tho Labour Party would leave the Government, and that the suggested! coalescence with the Opposition was " only a trick."

DUN'EDIN, May 4

Mr MeManus, secretary to the General Labourers' Union, says n, coalition either wi'th the opposition or the Government .arty is entirely out of the question as it would mean immediate disaster. Their plan of campaign would be similar to that of the Commonwealth Labour Party.

Mr R. Brcen, secretary of itlio Trad es and Labour Council, interA r io.\vetl this morning, said it was certain that a coalition with iMr Massey's Tarty wrs quits impassible. Any party that might he formed would certainly he forme*! independently of any other party.
