LEVIN BOROUGH COUNCIL.
— *— A meeting of tlio. Levin Boromjh Council was held last evening at the Council offices, Oxford street. The Mayor (Mr B. R. Gardener) presided , an dtlie following members were present:— Crs. Cameron, -France, Lancaster, Palmer, McKenzie, and Arc us, with the To wn Clerk (Mr Goldsmith). A WATER QUESTION. A letter was received; from tho Town Clerk of Johnsonville, enquiring whether this Council was supplying wa'ter to Government, or per meter to private people or businesses, and if so whether the Council would advise him of the quantity and rate. The Mayor remarked that the information would he supplied by tlio Town Clerk. HIGH PRESSURE SYSTEM, ilr T. Gregory wrote stating that he wished to obtain water from the high pressure system at the junction! in Queen street and Tiro Tiro road north. Other houses in the locality lie pointed out, would be wanting a. supply later oil. The Mayor pointed out that the letter only came in that day, and ho, therefore, suggested that it be referred to the Waterworks Committee. This course was agreed to. HOSPITAL ADMINISTRATION. A letter was received from the Wellington Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, forwarding notification of the amount of the apportionment to be contributed by the Council to the Board for the year 1910-11. The amount was for CIIP 3s, kind the Board stated i*.at they required the sum ito bo paid into the Bank of New Zealand at Wellington in four equal instalments, each of £29 15s The Mayor pointed out that the amount this year was slightly lesser than that of the previous year. Still there was nothing to boast about, because there was a balance of GBOOO carried over .om last year. The all-round estimates were ,1 groat deal larger than they were twelve montlvs ago. Economy would come, but he did not think it would come just vet. Cr. France: Tt will come yet Mr Mayor. The communication was noted. BATH STREET IMPROVEMENT. ilr I. Hook wrote, pointing out that ho had been askeui by the Streets Committee to give an estimate as to the cost of about 7\ chains of kerb and channeling in Bath street, also the cost of grading the same. He recommended that the footpath be left as it was at present, unless the kerbing was done to protect it. The cost of the kerbing and chaiuneling would be about £32 10s, and grading the 4'ootpath £4. Cr. Lancaster explained that ho and some of the committee wero inspecting the street the other day, and they came to the conclusion the water-race was a great nuisance, so they asked for a report and estimate on the subject. Cr. Mackenzie: Is the water-race any good there? Cr. Lancaster replied that he believed it was used lower down the street by the people. The Mayor said that certain water races were becoming such a nuisance and so costly that they might almost have to consider whether they would not have to he done away with, especially now that they had the high pressure system. Cr. France remarked that Bath street was one of the most important) streets in Levin, .and said that there were some very good houses in it. Cr. Lancaster, under the circumstances, moved that no action bo taken on the estimate and report. Cr. France asked the Mayor whether when :he referred to the waterraces he was referring to all the water-races in the borough. The Mayor: Certainly not. He added than in cases where there was to be considerable financial outlay there they would have to take those races into consideration, and later in the year it was his intention to move in that direction. Cr. Lancaster's motion was then agreed to. GAS MATTERS. ilr C. E. Shaw (manager of the gas works) presented his. .monthly report. This stated that' all in connection with the works was satisfactory. With reference to tho automatic street lighters, Mr Blackman had sent forward one controller, which he had tested, and it had "ivon every satisfaction. The number of consumers was 181. meters in public use 187, number of street lamps- 38, stoves in uso 38. Tho total output was 285,472 feet. The report was received. FIRE PROTECTION AT WERAROA. Cr. Cameron moved that the shed for hose reel at Weraroa be now erected, the nccessary appliances as authorised; having come to hand. Cr. Palmer seconded, and the motion was adopted.
