A NEGLECTED ORCHARD.
WARNING TO KRHTGROWIORS
John Cresswell. fruitgrower, of Richmond, \v;is charged at the Nelson Magistrate's Court on the information of Mr l<\ R. Ha I lam, Government orchard inspector, with having neglected to eradicate codlin moth and mussel scale and prevent the spread thereof. Defendant, who .admitted the offence, explained that ho had sprayed in the winter and had sprayed for codlin moth. He was away from home when the notice came from the inspector, and his daughter, who was keeping house, did not open it. On his return he immediately buried the apples. and did his best to deal with the pests. The orchard was an. old one, and he was now cutting it .back. The inspector said that ho visited the orchard on January 10th, and found a lot of apples on the ground badly infected with codlin moth. There were no signs of the trees having been sprayed. Notice wa.s sent to the defendant two days later, and found it in the same state . The apples were even falling on to the side of the street. Defendant's daughter then told him that her father was away. The magistrate observed that the fruit industry wa.s an important one, and it was imperative that orchards should be kept clean. Tn Richmond there were very clean orchards, and a lot .of clean fruit was grown. A fine of 10s was imposed, with 7s costs.
