Mr Dnniel j\l.orris presided, and Mr Hall-Jon'ro was among those present. In tho course* of his speech, Sir John said he looked forward with hope and pleasure to the prospect of tho high and responsible position. Ho intended to throw himself actively and sympathetically into tho social and industrial life of New Zealand. He strongly advocated a reciprocal nrroincement between Canada .and the West Tndies. West Tndinn traders with foreign connections feared the resentment of foreign countries, hut Sir John said tint he believed these apprehensions to he exaggerated. He diid not believe the family arrangement would bo regarded ins a hostile act if discreetly and judiciously established between the component parts of the Empire.
