HOROWHENUA BOATING CLUB.

KOWFXG OX THIO LAKIO. Considerable interest is being manifested in the competition for the medals presented by .Air Shaw, captain of the elnl). ' The four crews entered appear to bo evenly matched, as shown by the opinion of the liandicaper.s. Messrs Shaw ami Jennian, who hare declared the following handicaps for the race Anderson and Anderson, scratch; Kenton and Burge, scratch: Macintosh and Carruther.s, one length; Brewster and Allen, one length. The ladies double sculling race. Misses X. and J. Wooding against Misses Meitzel and C. Williamson, should prove to be «n attractive event. Both ci'ews are accomplished rowers and vprv evenly matched. The races will be rowed on Wednesday (to-morrow) afternoon. (By "Old 'Un.") Wednesday will see the big battle tor the Sli.aw medals. The battle is a rowing race, to be rowed over a mile course on the Horowheliua Lake. The weather, and other unavoidable reasons, have kept most of tite crews from putting in natch training, but one crew, 1 notice, has stuck pretty close to it. Thenstyle (if rowing has improved, and I 4iin pretty sure of seeing Scotland victorious. .If t'licy win, the.v will deserve it, as tliey h>ave stuck to their task through sunshine and rain. Now, 1 wonder what the hn.ndicappers will do. There are, I believe, as good inon rowing as the Anderson Bros., but the handieapper may say to himself, "Should I give these other ci'ews a start of the Andersons?" Certainly not; this writer would answer, considering the condition of the race. In my judgment, it should bo a scratch one-, and I do not see how any handicapping can be done. Fen ton and Burge are old hands at the game, and ought to shake things up fl bit. Mcintosh and Carrnthors are a very likely pair to look at, but T have not had n chance to see them out together. Brewster and Allen are young bloods with plenty of youth and vigour on their side, and really ought to row well. This will be the last race of tlio season, but next season we must get an early start. Perhaps some one will give us a cup to tow for. We must try and work op n. littlo enthusiasm among our business . men, as the progress of the Lake means the progress of the town, and thus the progress of the business people.
