•— ■— —- NEWS FROM SHANNON. (Chronicled by our Resident Representative.) Owing to the bad weather on Saturday, the cricket match betwee.ii the Druids and the Shannon Cricket Club did note take place. The elements, however, did not stop the footballers pursuing their pastime. A very good match took place, between Shannon 'and "Miranui," resulting in a win for the latter oy II points to nil. Tho following players represented tho winning team: ft. .T. King, Moreland McClehnd, Henderson, Brown, Pope, Buckninn, Stevenson, Wallace, Rapn, Wright, Smith, Dalziell, Flyger, Stott and Lamb. Sha.nnom wag represented by Thompson, Hunter, Can , , Malcolm, Grimstone, Coote, Timms, Cole, Osborne, Schmidt, Piincli, E. Thompson, T.' -Woods, Terry and .1. O.sborne. SHANNON'S DEFENDERS. o<n the rifle range Mr Bert Spencer succeeded in winning Mr Jenkins' prize, with a score of GO poiirts out of a possible 70; and Mr E. J. S. Spencer Avon the second prize, being tho geese presented by Mr Oag, with a score of 04 points. This was exceptionally good scoring considering bhf> gale thflt was blowing at the time. AN OCD IDENTITY'S DUATII. New.s was received here on Saturday of the death of Mr William Fitclie.tt, father of Mr W. H. Fitchett, of Simnnon. Mr Fitchett, who is a Derbyshire man, was oine of the old identities of Wellington, having lived, there nearly 08 years. His father took up land on the Ohiro road, and when he died, two of the sons, Messrs Aston I?. Fitchett and William Fitchett, occupied the property until thirty years ago. Mr Fitchett retired owing to ill-health, and hassinees lived iui Nairn .street. He Wii.s in .apparently perfect health on Friday, but on Saturday morning he was tnke.n suddenly ill. Dr. Hogg was siiiiuiioued, but he grew rapidly worse, and expired at 5.30 in the evening. Mrs Fitchett. who was a daughter of the late Mr Geo. Hawkins, of H.M. Customs, is still nlive. and there are two sons — namely, Mr W. H. Fitchett. of Shannon, and Mr Arthur Fitchett, of Wellington. The deceased, who was in ihis 75th year, also left three brothers: Mr A. B. Fitchet nnd Mr John Fitchett, both of Wellington, and Mr Arthur Fitchett. of Auckland: also a sister, Mrs Thomas SvnuMid.s. of P.ilincrston North. The funeral took place at tho Karori cemetery.
