LABOUR AT OTAKI.

A DFPARTMFXTAL UKPORT

Iu the Journal of the Department of Labour, issued this wec-k, the following report appeals concerning labour conditions and prospects •at Otaki:— There has been very little alteration in the condition of trade during the past month compared with the previous month. Retail houses report business as normal, while all other branches report trade as .slack. Dairy-fanners h'.ivu had a good season, which is now nearly finished, and no doubt a good many milking hands will be out of employment. Vei'd is fairly plentiful, .and stock generally look well. There is no demand whatever for unskilled labour. There have been no applicants for work during the month, and no overtime applied for.

Ruildiug trades: Bricklaying normal. Carpentry and joinery fair:

local builders have been fully employ:;.l, and several new houses are in course of erection. Painting quiet. Plumbing and gaslitting fair.

Woodworking trades: Cabiuetiuaking and upholstering fair. Sash and door f>aetories quiet. Sawmil-

ling busy

Leather trades: Bnotmaking (repair shops) and saddlery and liar-' nexsmaking fair. Clothing trades: Tailoring (order shops) fair. Retail trades generally normal.

Printing fair. Coai'bbuildiiig trades: Blacksmithitig busy. Coach and carriage building fair. Cycle and motor trades fairly brisk: local hands fully employed.

Agricultural operations: Fanning, dairying, etc., very good. Feed is abuo'hiiit, and stock •renerally look well. Tl'y dairying season is iwnv drawing to a close, and farmers are planting for the winter. Miscellaneous: The two hasketfactorie.s report a fair business. Flax-milling is in full mving, and all hands are well employed. The aerated-water factory also reports i.-nrv! ti'.ade.
