HOROWHENUA RUGBY FOOTBALL UNION.
ANNUAL -MEETING
The annual meeting of the liorowhenua. Football Union was held. at the Alnnakau Hotel last evening, some 20 delegates, representing the various clubs of the district, being present. .Mr Hums, in the absence of Mr D. .S. .Mackenzie, was voted to the chiair. Tho minutes of tho previous meeting were read and confirmed. SECRETARY'S REPOPT. The secretary (Mr A. Tlionvo) presented the following report:— Your committee report during season 1909-10 six clubs wore under the jurisdiction of the Union. That four senior and Jive junior clubs, commenced the lirst round in the Club contests, olio junior subsequently falling out through lack of players. The winners of the banners m these contests were: Kia To-a the senior, and Ivereru the junior. These teams are to bo congratulated upon their wins. The football of the club contests was good, amd the games were fought out in a sportsmanlike manner. There were Jive representative matches played, resulting in one win and four losses, 75 points being scored against amd 3-1 points for. These re.sults do not altogether represent the games, as our win was against tho strongest combination, and against the next strongest combination there was only the narrow margin of one point. The following players scored for Horowhenua: Cook. Coote, Pawiri, Ward, George, Tims, Martin AViniata, Nepia Winiata and Arcus. and Walter AViniata and Pawiri added points for kicks at goal. Tho order of the Horowhenua football was well maintained, and fought out in the proper spirit. Our opponents were well pleased and expressed pleasure and thanks for tho enjoyable games tliev experienced in Horowhenua. This will go far to place football in the place it well deserves. Tha.nks are due to our selector, Mr Sout-bey Fowler. "While the selector is often "slated" for the results of tlio games, Mr Fowler's position was not «a.n envious one, amd he cannot be blamed that then* was not a narrower margin. He effected his work impartially and judiciously, and the selection of a. representative team entails a few very anxious moments. Thanks are also duo to our delegate to the New Zealand Union, Mr J. G. Stevens. for the manner in which he. carried out the instructions of the Management Committee, and for the pains he took to report to the committee. One important feature of the season was the good work of the newly formed Peferees Association. They proved that (he M"iiagemepf, Committer had not misplaced tlieir confidence. Tim work hitherto of selecting referees had devolved upon the Management Committee, and had entailed a great deal of time amd anxiety. The "ommitk'e take this opportunity to express their thanks to tho .Association, and to the individual members for their work. Those members gave up their Saturday afternoons. sometimes riding miles to help in tho game. The position of a referee is a most unenviable one, but these mem proved themselves •>s well able to control the g\aino as to play it. A word of thanks is id.so fine to the Press and public. Had the weather been more propitious, this balance would have been a inn eh larger one. An espcaal word of thanks to the Press is duo for their soporous donations. Tho Management Committee have a. few words of praise for the officers of the various clubs and the individual players, who always showed a willingness to assist the committee to t.ho best of their power, thus enabling the committee to conduct the affairs of the Union efficiently; without this unanimity no management committee can carry on their duties well — also making these duties pleasant and the work a pleasure. There were onlv a. few players reported for questionable play, and a,II the games were free from accidents; and verv few unfair tactics were employed. This, again, has tended to make the gamo more popular, and to place it in the hiirh place it deserves in sport. The report was received. BALANCF SHEET. The balance-sheet showed that tin* committee .started the year with a liability of L'o.'i 18s, and after putting through their own working expenses for the year, they wiped off the whole of the previous year's deficiency with the exception of a little over £'(>. , The balance sheet was adopted as read.
