In a Smoking Carriage.
A Scotch elyergymaii, having settled himself in a smokiiig compartment at a village station, found the door being opened by a lishwile. The clergyman wishing to be nlone, said to her, very civilly: "My good woman, this is a smoking compartment." But she paid mo attention. Thinking she was probably deaf, he repeated the remark in a louder tone. Bv this time the wiiinainvas pushing her creel into the carriage; and still no notice was taken.
For the third time, and in quite a stentorian voice, lie shouted the same intimation.
The woman made no reply, but got into the carriage, and taking a pipe from her pocket, she filled it wiith strong twist tobacco, lit it, and looking at the clergyman, said: "Ye thoeht naebody could smoke but yoursel', niv bonnie mail ; but you're saur mistook."
