The use of Dogs.
Tt is curious that though we are a dog-loving people, wo do not use our dogs in this country for draught purposes. In the lash century, as wo have recorded, the oldest postmaster used dogs to draw the cart. And nowadays the seaside knows the goat tint draws the baby-chaise. But the dog. for some obscure reason, is ruled out of such service. Not that we neglect his services in hunting, as a watchman or as a detective. But he is no longer asked to drag a barrow as he is in France, Belgium and Germany. Yet so soon as an Arctic expedition is planned the dog is called in to pull the sledge. And you may notice the curious difference between the Northern dog (with the touch of the wolf 'still evident) and tho cultured dog of the London ■drawiner-room. Tnkc the pug out 011, a chain, and he hangs back. But nut a chow-chow on a chain and hf> pulls violently forward. His instinct is to work against the collar. Tt is still something of a mystery wl'v the (low is not permitted to work for his living between tho shafts in En eland.
