Strained Relations.
NEWSPAPERS AT VARIANCE. Therea re strained relations between the newspaper proprietors at Westport, as the following paragraph, culled from the "Westport News," will show "The local weekly shows even more pointedly how the presence ol 1 a member of that firm on the Boxing Association was used, not for the beneiit of lovers of boxing, but tor the benefit of the local weekly emphasising the remarks we made in a previous issue. At the first boxing tournament, the Miner annexed £113, as compared with the dailies, which naturally are of more service to such gatherings than the weekly, "News" £0 Is and "Times" £0. "The Miner," apparently by virtue of the "Miner" man's presence on tho committee, made a regular scoop 011 that occasion as he did on the second, when the accounts were: "Miner" £10 Os 2d, "News" £1 4s, "Times £1 Os (id. Other stationers in the town got no consideration with the avaricious weekly man on the committee. We have taken the ".Miner's" figures, which may or may not be correct. For instance the "Miner's" account for last tournament is stated to be G9 7s Gd, whereas the account banded in to the secretary and presented to the committee to be passed for payment was, as previously stated by us, £10 Os 2d, the "Miner's" present statement being an error of merely about 13s, or suggesting that, because the committee refused to pass the higher account, revision lias been necessary. Total for two tournaineaits: "Miner" £21 3s 2d, "News" £0 8s 6d, "Times" £G Os Gd. The whole affair should, however, serve to convince the public that it is not the interests of any particular sport or of the town that induces the "Miner" man to £0 on committees, but the firm's own pocket."
