Some startling allegations ware made in a case in which a wharf labourer was charge:! with stealing cargo frnni the steamer Moldavia. Accii 1 -'! .! indicated I hat there was a wholesale system of broaching cargo in which he was compelled to take part or incur the enmity of his fellow workers. Ho. said he had left Melbourne to escape the practice, hilt had found it just as rile in Sydney. He would not name the men implicated with liiin as his life would not he safe. A stevedore stated in evidence that cargo-broaching was a common practice and there were a large number of men engaged in it, but, as they stuck to each other, it was almost impossible to sheet homo a conviction.
