IToitowui'Nn.v County, according to remarks made at last Saturday's meeting of the Levin Branch of the Farmers' I'liion. contains some well grown exhibits of noxious weeds. One farmer described -how an excellent display of ragwort in full flower was to b;> seen in the centre of Levin, and this reference elicited statements that several farms in the district badly infested with different noxious weeds, und spreading the seeds on to lands which were carefully looked after. The point upon which the farmers present Jit the meeting seemed to split was whether there should be more Government inspectors put on to superintend operations, or whether farmers should rely upon independent action. To our mind, there is need for Full utilisation of both means of safeguarding the district. It is manifestly impossible for one inspector to supervise adequately the long stretch of country between Feilding and Paekakariki, as he is now expected to do, even if the landowners prove themselves to be diligence personified, in their war upivii. weeds. And when it is remembered that there always will be some cultivators of the land who fail to do their duty in exterminating weeds, the need For more than one inspector in this great district becomes apparent. The adjuration to be u]i and doing, which Mr Wilson gave to bis fellow farmers, is am excellent piece of advice, but there is need, too.-for an additional inspector or two to run the scarifier of legal proceedings against those negligent landholders whose remissness penalises their more conscientious
