WERAROA EXPERIMENT FARM
THE EXHIBITS AT THE SHOW
The value of the Experiment Kami at Wevarou has been demonstrated on numerous occasions, and the splendid work which is being carried on there was strikingly ex."nplilied at the Autumn Show of t ! ie Levin Horticultural, Industrial •mid I'roduce Society, and Mr J. Drysdale. the manager, and Mr AY. 11. Taylor, the orchard overseer, re(•••ived I lie hearty congratulations of Ihn \isitors on the variety and i|iiality of the exhibits. The farm lints .vhdwn w^vt 1 a splendid lot. Most ot , it was-sown on the 31st if .August. !!)()!», flinl reaped the first week in .January. The ".Algerian'' variety yielded no less than I).") bushels per acre; "Great Dakot'i," harvested on .January Ith, vi'lded ■">•") bushels per nevo, "Storm King" ■")() bushels, .and Garton 00 bushels. "Argentine" was a splendid heavy crop and yielded ()•") bushels to the acre. The barley classes wire another triumph, both in the way of yield and quality. "Ideal" g.".ve I" bushels to the acre, "Nonpareil" •")() bushels, and "Azov " ">0 bushels. The wheat c;yiihit.s excited the attention of farmers in particular, who spoke in terms of high praise, of the "Tuscan" variety, which yielded Oil bushels per .are. "Mi;!).- , ." giving All, and "ISorlear" and "Federation" each 10, while ''I'ig I''oiii'" went •") bushels higher. Samples of m;iize were a :li-1 iiigui-hing feature. They were so-,.-,:!,(.ii feet high. and ;ire- undoubtedly the best grown in the Noitii Island. There was also a MO.iiiber of swe'es, turnips, potatoes, carrots and field pumpkins of liiainip'ith size, while the mangolds were held to be lln* liest in tile show. The "Ailsa Craig" onions deserve a special word for their clean, well-'-•'■ciped formation. There were alsii srmil , good samples of Hrown Spanish onions. About HI vni ieties of apples were shown, and the samples again proved the capabilities of the orchard department. They attracted a very uxeat deal of attention, as well ■is did the pears, fxperts holding that, many of the varieties were the in'-! they bad ever seen. The colouring in liianv eases was a particularly noticeable feature. Grapes were a \.t.v line lot, and demons'! rated Ihe capacity of the climate for vino growing. Ten sorts of uninces were exhibited, the "Ynn Dieaian" being one of the best lots. Among the grasses which are liein,.; |)lanti'd may lie mentioned the " Prickly Comfrey," which is Lfi'own extensively in England for -■lieep fee-liii'.;. and New Zealand fanners would not be unwise in -_'ivi::': the grab's n good trial. '•|'l"i!:!ris Coiumnl-ita." is another 'jTa»-, of a very valuable character. Its vain: , on liow it stands It is an expensive seed to Iγ;v. but has hern found of great utility t:i fanners -who have .sown ii.
