LEYIN HOCKEY CTJ'T?

(Contributed by " Sticks.")

A few facts eibi.ut the abovo chili, which won the. Horowhenna Championship last season, will pro* balily be of interest to hockey players in general. The club was founded in March, li)O.S. The inaugural meeting was called by Messrs I). S. Mac]a>nzio ■and 0. \\ v . Allen, when the following ollicers were, elected:—President: Mr J. Kebbell; vice-presi-dents: Messrs J. Matier, J. I , rouse, G. Polts and Garland; captain:!). S. Miicke.ii/ju; vice-captain: J. P. Barnett; secretary: C. AY. Allen; treasurer: Hugh Hall; committee: Messrs Mitchell, Uutt, Middleton, and C. K. AYilscm ; auditor: Mr J. M.cTntvre.

Tin , team was not entered for any competition, but playod several matches Avith Wellington and J'almcrsion teams. The iir.st match Av;is with Knrori, which was won by 7 »o!iIs to 1. The next year, 1901. a team was entered for the P.awiok Shield (I'almerston North). Home and home matches had to be played, which mennt that the Levin team had to travel to Palmerston .six limes. The. afternoon train did not reach Palmerston till after four o'clock. This did not allow of the full spells Iming played, but not to be denied, the Levin hoys arranged for a fast dray; to meet them at Loiighurn and thus saved ten mi.nutes. Little details such as changing in the train and going without dinner and tea did not matter to tlio.se pioneers of the game. Twelve- games were ])layed in all, nine being won and three drawn. The following were the nieml)ers of the. famous team: Saxon, Hitehings. Hronghton. Karrington. Potts. Horo. Hutt, Hall, Allen. Mackenzie. Hums, Harnett, nnd Wilsran. The same year Messrs Burns. Allen. Mackenzie, Potts and, Karrinfit-on won tlie five-aside tournament against all-comers at I *:t 1merst cm North Show. Xext season the te;im were riiniiers-iip for \\\o coveted championship. being Vip.'UiMi by Old Hoys in the final. Next year, 1!')()(!, Horowhenua became a sub-union to Manawatu, tiio ai'ran.iiement bein<j; that the winners in each union should play off for the chiunpiunsliip. Levin u:on .it this end, but were defeated by Old Hoys a.uaiii. In 1007 Horowhenna biamr a separate ui ion. sec?il! •.;>; frcir, .Ma'i-a-watu. Levin Club lapsed into semi-ohscurity, lnit came to lifjdit ac;ain last yeiir, wiiiniuir tho Glackin Cup m (food style, thanks to tho \eterans rallying laund. The average ao;e of last year's team was 32. al'thoimh two colts of 18 and 23 w; v re included. Another remarkable fact is that the club has never in its history h.:id more than fifteen members. Included in last yivir'.s team wvw the following, who have played consistently since the club's inception : Hall. Mackenzie, Karrin.mton. Saxon Jt,nd Hums. On the whole the club, thonph numerically so small, has a record of which any club be- justly proud. A local hockey ciiib, composed mostly ol young members, is. receiving kindly paternal interest from the older citizens of Levin. Following on the donations of Messrs Kentiiii, .leiiman and Keedwell to the Levin Rovers Hockey Club, '•oines .Mr H. \Y.alkley, with tho promise of a hockey stick to be awarded in any department of the game that the club decides on. A meml>!,r of the club who forwards this information adds that if the. Movers do not annex the Glackin Onp this year -well, they ought to.
