Sugar Beet and " Brad= ford Tops."

IMPORTANT FACTS FOR FARMERS. Two proposals worthy of the best consideration of any agricultural and pastoral association were mentioned at the last meeting of the Marlborough A. and P. Association. The one was in the direction of testing the suitability of the district for the sugar-beet industry. The other was that <a standard set of Bradford wool tops be procured and placed oil permanent exhibition. In a leading article on the subject, the "Marlborough Herald" expresses a ihope that the local investigations will result in a satisfactory test of the local resources in this connection. There is some difference of opinion as to the best way to gc to work to carry out the experiment, but the "Herald" has every confidence that the enterprising spirit that animates the officers of the A. and P. Association will be equal to the occasion. The member for the district (Mr Duncan) is following the matter up, and is consulting the Agricultural Department to secure from it the best advice and the largest possible measure of assistance. There are great possibilities attached to tlio sugar beet industry, and an institution in a district with superior advantages of soil would, contribute in an important degree to the prosperity of the community. On the point as to Bradford wool tops, the "Herald" states that it is a well known fact that a large majority of pastoralists have but tho haziest idea of the nature of "tops" and they are working absolutely in the dark in respect to the requirements of the Bradford manufacturers. This is not as it should be with the body of men who represent the main industry of the dominion, and who are among tho most intelligent sections of the community. Common up-to-dateness dictates that the wool-growers should know what they aro doing and why they are doing it.
