No Wages for Mother.
SHE DID NO WOEK. Every year or two somebody digs out, from the repose of a scrapbook, some good story that has been resting long enough lo become as good as new. Then the story goes once again on its long tour of the world's press, and gives pleasure to millions of people who had wholly or half forgotten it. The latest example that the " Chronicle " has come across is the story of " why mother got no wages." It explains how a growing ooy had obtained a small job—his first—and boasted how much work he did. "I gets up at half past five and has me breakfast," said he. "Any one else get up, too?" he Was asked. "Oh, yes! mother. She gets me breakfast, and then she gets dad's at half-past 6." "And your dinner?" "Oh, mother gets that, too, and then she gets father's." "Has tho afternoon to herself?" "Oh, >no! she cleans up, looks after tli children, gets the .tea ready for dad ami me when we comes home. >.e lias our smoke and then we gets to bed." "Ami your mother?" "Well, she does a bit of sewing then, after she has cleaned up after tea." 'What wages do you get?" the boy was asked. "Oh, t get ti'ii Dob, and dad gets thirtyfive." "And your mother ?" "Mother! She' don't get no wages; she don't do no work."
