The Standard (Unionist) summarising Lord Lansdowne's second I chamber policy, considers that un- > dor it the powers of veto would not i be weakened. The number of • Peers, the journal points out, would be reduced, but the whole of the Peerage would select representatives to their own body. Others would sit without election by virtue of their public, services. The Government of the day would also select a number of Peers with tenure of office, long enough not to be influenced by general elections. The principle of the life Peerages would, ' bo extended to cover representation of all schools of political thought and the great interests of " the country.
