A Call for Assistance.

▼• { } THE HECTOR MEMORIAL. A momorinl to the most eminent of fcll New Zealand scientists—the late Sir James Hector—has been financially supported by the public of New Zealand in a degr.ee less liberal than that to several less solidlybased appeals that have been made in the last decade. - After a lapse of some years the Hector Memorial Fund at last has assumed sufficient proportions to denote a. wide public appreciation of the deep learning and acumen and originality and wonderful edudition of New Zealand's great scientist. Unfortunately. however, the committee of the fund is faced with the unpleasant position thai unless a. further sum of £50 is donated before tho. 31st instant a proportion of the promised Government subsidy will be lost. The position is put in a circular issued by Mr Martin Chapman, of Wellington, as follows:— "The committee have obtained from the Government a subsidy of £1 for £1 up to £500. Tlie subscriptions already to hand amount to £4.53 10s Gd, being £49 9s Gd short of £500. It is desired, if possible, to obtain the whole £500 from the Government, but to do so on the present vote the above further sum of £46 9s Gd must be collected before the 31st March, 1910, when the vote will lapse. The committee would be glad to receive any additional contributions subscribers may like to make, and to receive new subscriptions, and it would point out that every £1 subscribed before 31st March, up to the sum of £500, produces a further £1 subsi/y from the Government."

The Hector Memorial Committee, in Wellington, consists of Sir Robert Stout, KIC.M.G., Chief Justice, Wellington; Mr Martin Chapman, K.C., Wellington; Professor T. H. Easterfield, Victoria College, Wellington ; Dr J. M. Mason, Department of Public Health, Wellington; Mr Alexander D. Crawford, 114 Wellington terrace, Wellington ; Mr T. King, Messrs Levin and Co., Limited, Wellington ; Mr B. C. Aston, lion, secretary, ,71 Upper Devon street, Kelburne.
